The poet, novelist and playwright Xohana Torres was born in Santiago de Compostela in 1931. After combining her defence of Galician culture and of the role of women in society with a successful literary career, she entered the Real Academia Galega en 2001. In 1992, the Concellaría da Muller do Concello de Santiago and the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela established an annual research and essay prize – with a triple humanistic, social and scientific focus – bearing the name of the distinguished writer and academician. The prize’s aim is to call attention to women from the Autonomous Region of Galicia who have stood out for some reason, whether individually or collectively, whether in the past or in present times. Collection discontinued in 2012.
