In this study we examine the morphology, anatomy, molecular variation and systematics of the arionid species in the Iberian Peninsula. The anatomical and morphological study included topotypes (i.e. specimens collected at the type localities of the species) of all slug species of the genus Arion described in the Iberian Peninsula. We collected specimens at various developmental stages and at different times of the year in each type locality. Sampling was conducted from 1980 to 2018, with increased effort in localities where multiple Arion species potentially coexist or where type specimens were originally collected. Over 40 years, more than 5000 specimens were collected, photographed, anesthetized and preserved in situ. Species-level identification was based on the external morphology of juveniles and adults, as well as the anatomy of the genital system and adjacent structures. From 2015 onwards, some specimens were collected specifically for studying the evolutionary relationships among species. This monograph is complemented by the open access digital edition of plates not included in the printed edition.
